Toronto, in brief

Legal landscape
Where it happens
The crowd
“One downtown mansion built around a heated pool, and a cluster of upscale clubs out in the 905 — Toronto's scene lives more in Mississauga than in Toronto.”
Toronto's lifestyle scene is legally settled and geographically lopsided. The 2005 Supreme Court ruling in R v Labaye — a case that started with a Montreal club — established nationwide that private, consensual group activity among adults isn't criminally indecent (Wikipedia). That protection attaches to private, members-only settings, which is exactly how the Toronto-area venues run: licensed bars, ID at the door (19+ in Ontario, 21+ at one club), photography banned inside, and membership-plus-admission as the standard model.
The twist is where it all happens. Only one major on-premise club, Oasis Aqualounge, is in Toronto proper. The rest of the action sits a 20-40 minute drive west, clustered in Mississauga and Oakville — a short hop by car or GO Transit, but a meaningful one if you assumed the scene was downtown.
The lay of the land
Four venues carry the on-premise scene, and each runs a distinct register. The directory at TorontoClubs gives the clearest at-a-glance read of who's who (TorontoClubs). Single men admitted Sun-Thu only; women-only and first-timer nights run on a calendar Club M4 (Menage a Quatre) The GTA's busiest on-premise club; about 10,000 sq ft, open every night of the year, in Mississauga Broad, all-ages-19+ mix; couples and single men The volume play, $60 annual membership. A local writer calls it a 'naughty playground for swingers.' Single men every night except Saturday The X Club & Mermaid Lounge Dual concept in Mississauga: spa with pool/sauna by day, 21+ lifestyle nightclub after 9pm weekends Upscale couples, single women, pre-screened single men; described as roughly 25-50 Door is 21+.
The practical read: Oasis is the body-positive, women-and-couples spa club; Club M4 is the no-frills, open-every-night workhorse; The X Club is the polished spa-and-nightclub with the gentlest newcomer on-ramp; NYX is the upscale, screened, members-only lounge.
Single men, plainly
The pattern is consistent and stricter than the downtown myth suggests. Single men get in Sunday-Thursday only at Oasis, every night except Saturday at Club M4, on Fridays and pre-screened Sunday-Kink afternoons at The X Club, and at NYX only when accompanied. It isn't a snub — it's the balance every on-premise club guards. Book ahead, expect screening, and don't read a weekday admission as a weekend invitation.
Myth: Toronto's scene is a downtown thing you can walk to from your hotel. Reality: Only Oasis Aqualounge is in Toronto proper. Club M4 and The X Club are in Mississauga and NYX is in Oakville — the real centre of gravity is the western 905, a drive or GO Transit ride from the core (TorontoClubs).
Dress codes are taken seriously here — smart-casual to club wear, and sneakers, sweatpants and shorts are commonly refused at the door. Several clubs run explicit first-timer entry points (Oasis's 'First Taste,' The X Club's Newbie Night), which are the easiest way to test the water without overcommitting.

Etiquette & law
- Legal age is 19+; bring government photo ID.
- Legal status: Legal. Clubs operate as private, members-only venues.
- Consent is explicit and ongoing. Always ask; no means no.
- Photography is prohibited inside almost every venue.
- Legal protection (per R v Labaye, 2005 SCC 80, a Supreme Court of Canada ruling that applies nationwide) covers private, members-only settings; Toronto-area venues operate as private clubs and keep activity out of public view. The clubs are licensed and serve alcohol. Note Ontario's age split: the age of majority is 18, but the legal drinking age - and the minimum age for licensed venues - is 19 (per the AGCO). Some clubs set the bar higher: The X Club & Mermaid Lounge admits 21+. Government photo ID is required at the door.
