San Diego, in brief

San Diego's lifestyle scene is small but clearly drawn. Two on-premise clubs sit at opposite ends of the same city - one a half-century-old swingers institution, the other a purpose-built kink and ENM venue - and a private-party circuit fills the gap underneath them. California permits private, consensual adult activity in a non-public, members-only setting; the firm lines are the commercial ones (no prostitution, no unlicensed alcohol sales, nothing visible to the public), which is exactly why almost everything here runs BYOB (Yelp).
The two poles
Thad's, at 3517 E St just east of downtown, bills itself as San Diego's only licensed swingers club and has been swinging since 1974. House of Black, a 3,500 sq ft venue in a Sorrento Valley strip mall, is the kink-forward counterpart: dungeon furniture, Saint Andrew's crosses, suspension rigs, dramatic lighting, and a crowd negotiating scenes with a D/s element in the air (House of Black; Vanilla Swingers). Illuminaughty since 2022, LUXX/CRAVE) Vetted couples and singles, often 21-49 Apply/screen in advance through the host, not a random link
The kink-leaning end of the city (House of Black) puts consent on the wall - people negotiate scenes and ask before they touch - which is a different register from the come-as-you-are swingers house.
Underneath the two clubs is a private-party layer. Illuminaughty has run invite-only swinger parties and ENM cocktail mixers for the 21-49 crowd since 2022, and traveling operators like LUXX Events and CRAVE Lounge fold San Diego into a national house-party and hotel-suite schedule (Illuminaughty; LUXX). This is the part you can't walk into - it runs on screening.
Myth: Thad's is licensed, so it's the easy walk-in option for anyone.
Practical notes carry across all of it: both clubs are drive or rideshare destinations rather than walkable nightlife, the BYOB model means you bring your own (plan a designated driver), and the venue minimum age is generally 21. Confirm each venue's current night and entry process before you go - the schedules shift.
