Miami, in brief

Legal landscape
Where it happens
Beyond the clubs
The crowd
“It's messy, chaotic, and intoxicating in a way that clean swingers clubs can't replicate.”
Miami's lifestyle scene has a split personality, and most of it is decided by a map. The legal layer is settled and unglamorous: Florida treats private, consensual adult sex as nobody's business, so the clubs run as private members-only nonprofits and none of them holds a liquor license. You bring your own bottle; they hand you mixers and ice. That single legal fact shapes the whole night — there's no bar tab, just a membership fee and a door cover that climbs on weekends.
Where it actually happens
Inside the city there is one true on-premise club, Miami Velvet, a windowless 20,000-square-foot room out in the Airport West/Doral pocket near the airport. It opens Fridays and Saturdays only, runs a strict 21-plus door, and admits single men on Fridays alone. A review on VanillaSwingers calls it "part nightclub, part spa, and part play palace" with a stylish mid-30s-to-50s crowd — and flags that Fridays draw a pushier single-male energy, so couples who don't want that are told to come Saturday.
The real depth is up the highway in Broward County, a 30-to-50-minute drive that locals treat as part of the deal. That's where the established floors are, including a three-decade veteran known as much for an in-house kitchen as for its play rooms.
| Format | What it is | Who goes | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| On-premise club (Miami Velvet) | The only in-city play venue, Doral/Airport West | Couples and single women; single men Fridays only | Fri–Sat only, strict 21+, BYOB, membership required, drive or rideshare |
| Broward clubs (Trapeze, Velvet FTL) | The deeper bench, 30–50 min north | Couples-led crowd, single men gated to certain nights | Higher single-male cover, valet on site, plan a designated driver for BYOB |
| Clothing-optional hotel (Rooftop Resort) | South Florida's only nude adult hotel, Hollywood | Day-pass and overnight couples; softer entry | No membership, day passes, Saturday 'Eden' lifestyle night |
| Hotel takeovers (Libertine and others) | South Beach buyouts, clothing-optional weekends | Couples, tourist-heavy, party energy | Play happens in rooms — Miami zoning bans outdoor play areas |
| Haulover nude beach | County-sanctioned clothing-optional sand | Lifestyle-friendly but public, not a play space | Stay inside the posted boundary; no explicit conduct, no photos |
The resort flavour
What sets Miami apart from a pure club town is everything around the clubs. Promoters buy out South Beach boutique hotels for clothing-optional weekends, and regulars on the takeover circuit note the play happens behind room doors rather than poolside, since Miami zoning doesn't allow an outdoor play area the way a dedicated lifestyle resort does. North of Miami Beach, the clothing-optional north end of Haulover has been a magnet for the lifestyle crowd since it was legally sanctioned in 1991 — a low-pressure place to tan and mingle, not a play space.
The scene leans firmly couples-and-single-women, with single men gated to specific nights and a markedly higher cover when they do get in.
The discretion culture is blunt and enforced. Miami Velvet's house line — everything you see and hear here stays here — is the local version of the consent-and-privacy code that runs every serious club: ask before you touch, no means no at any point, and cameras are out. Violations get you walked and banned.
Myth: Miami is a wild, anything-goes party town, so the lifestyle scene must be loose and easy to wander into. Reality: The clubs are private members-only nonprofits with strict consent rules, a 21+ door at Miami Velvet, and gated single-male access; Miami New Times frames the whole scene around community, accountability, and "don't touch without asking."
The practical advice is logistical, not legal. The in-city club is an industrial drive with no street life around it, the good Broward floors are a highway trip you should plan transport for, and the BYOB model plus distance makes a designated driver the obvious move. On the event-and-beach side, standard big-city precautions apply: keep your tab and belongings in view and hold personal details back until trust is there.

Etiquette & law
- Legal age is 21+; bring government photo ID.
- Legal status: Legal. Clubs operate as private, members-only venues.
- Consent is explicit and ongoing. Always ask; no means no.
- Photography is prohibited inside almost every venue.
- Private, consensual adult sexual activity in a non-public setting is not in itself a crime in Florida, and South Florida lifestyle clubs operate on a private, members-only model (Trapeze, for example, chartered itself as a private nonprofit) requiring membership to enter. Established local reporting on the scene invokes the Florida lewd/lascivious standard - that acts are not 'lewd' or 'lascivious' unless they substantially intrude on the rights of others (a phrasing the Broward-Palm Beach New Times traces to Schmitt v. State, 590 So. 2d 404 (Fla. 1991)); note that Schmitt is principally a child-exploitation/privacy decision, so treat it as the framing used by media rather than a clean adult-swinging holding. The firm legal lines are commercial and public-decency ones: no paying for sex (prostitution is illegal), no sexual activity visible to the public, no unlicensed sale of alcohol - which is why every club here is BYOB rather than holding a bar license - plus local zoning and business-operation rules. Venue minimum age is commonly 21 in Miami (Miami Velvet is strictly 21+); some venues are adult-only/18+ but several clubs do not publish an exact door age, so confirm per venue. Separately, Miami-Dade County sanctions a clothing-optional section at the north end of Haulover Beach (legally recognized since 1991), where nudity is permitted but lewd conduct, explicit activity and non-consensual photography are not.
