Las Vegas, in brief

Good to know
“Vegas is the rare American city where the swingers club has a marquee, a parking lot, and a website - not an address you have to be vouched into.”
Most American lifestyle scenes hide. Vegas advertises. The defining fact of this city is that its biggest play spaces have storefronts, parking lots, and websites you can find without a referral - a function of Nevada's permissive footing and Clark County's eventual, court-forced acceptance of sex clubs. The Red Rooster won a 2010 fight that pushed the county to rewrite its sex-club ordinance (Wikipedia). That history is why a first-timer can walk up to a door here in a way they couldn't in most of the country.
The Two Institutions
Everything in Vegas orbits two veterans. The Red Rooster started in 1982 as an 850-square-foot house party run by Mike and Chris Borchers and grew into a roughly 13,000-square-foot club in Whitney, about seven miles east of the Strip (Wikipedia). It's BYOB - you check your bottles with the bartender - with an outdoor pool and hot tub, an upstairs that runs couples-only, and a door that admits unlimited single men at tiered prices. The Green Door opened in 1998 off East Sahara and reopened in 2021 after the pandemic (Las Vegas Review-Journal). At around 18,000 square feet it's a dark, black-lit fantasy maze - dungeon, doctor's office, jacuzzi and voyeur rooms, plus couples-only areas - and, unusually, it's a dry venue: no alcohol at all (greendoorlasvegas.com).
Reading the Map
The scene splits sharply along one axis - who gets in - and the smart move is to pick your room before you pick your night.
| Venue | What it is | Who goes | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Red Rooster | Oldest club in the area; BYOB, pool, casual | Couples, single women, single men (tiered door) | Cash 'donation' door; upstairs runs couples-only (Wikipedia) |
| Green Door | about 18,000 sq ft themed-room maze, black-lit | All welcome incl. single men | Dry venue - no alcohol; membership model, not a cover (greendoorlasvegas.com) |
| Whispers | Couples & solo-ladies venue with an outdoor pool | Couples and single women only | Clothing-optional daytime pool parties in summer; donation/association model (whispersvegas.com) |
| Sea Mountain / Dharma | Nude day-club and spa minutes from the airport | Couples and women only - 'no single men ever' | Upscale, 24-hour-feel resort framing (dharmaswingersclub.com) |
Beyond the open-door clubs there's a curated tier - vetted, application-only rooms like PlayhouseLV that cap attendance and run on monthly dues - for couples who want the Vegas energy without the tourist volume.
The split that matters isn't fancy-vs-casual. It's the few rooms that admit single men versus the many that don't - and the donation door that keeps no money changing hands for sex.
Myth: Vegas clubs are basically strip clubs with extra steps. Reality: They're members/donation venues where nobody is paid for sex - the legal distinction that keeps them open.
The tourist factor cuts both ways. Because the clubs are used to first-timers and out-of-towners, the bar to entry is low and the staff are unfazed by nerves. The flip side, regulars on review sites note, is that high-volume rooms can skew toward lookers and single men on a busy weekend - which is exactly why the couples-and-women-only venues exist as the counterweight.

Etiquette & law
- Legal age is 21+; bring government photo ID.
- Legal status: Legal. Clubs operate as private, members-only venues.
- Consent is explicit and ongoing. Always ask; no means no.
- Photography is prohibited inside almost every venue.
- On-premise swinger clubs operate legally in Las Vegas as private, membership/'by-association' BYOB clubs - the critical legal line is that no money is exchanged for the sexual activity itself. Clark County's code makes a 'sex club' (defined since 2011 as a business letting people 'view or participate in a live sex act for consideration/for money') a public nuisance, but consensual swinging where patrons pay only a door 'donation' and bring their own alcohol falls outside that definition. The Red Rooster's owners (Borchers Family Trust) won an August 2010 Clark County District Court ruling that the prior ordinance was unconstitutionally vague, prompting the county to rewrite it in March 2011 to define 'live sex act' more precisely; the county has periodically pressed individual operators (e.g. a 2019-2020 dispute over the Whispers property), which is why clubs are careful to frame themselves as private membership groups and to ban any pay-for-play. Brothels are separately illegal in Clark County by state law (counties over 700,000 may not license them), so swinger clubs are not and cannot be sex-for-money venues. Clubs are 21+ (Nevada drinking age; the Red Rooster sets its own higher 25+ door) and enforce a strict no-cameras/recording rule. None operate full bars selling alcohol: most are BYOB (the Red Rooster checks your bottles at in-house bars), while the Green Door permits no alcohol at all.
