Houston, in brief

“There is no off-season and no neon district - just unmarked freeway-retail doors off FM 1960 and US-290, open the same nights every week.”
Houston does not have a lifestyle district. It has a lifestyle highway map. The clubs sit in low-key suburban strip-center addresses off FM 1960, US-290/Hempstead, SH 249 and I-45 - drive-or-rideshare destinations 30 to 40 minutes north of downtown, not a walkable scene. That dispersal is the point. Discretion is built into the geography.
The other defining fact is legal. Texas only treats a venue as a 'sexually oriented business' when it offers both live nude entertainment and on-premises alcohol (Tex. Bus. & Com. Code Sec. 102.051). Strip out one leg and the statute doesn't apply - which is exactly why every Houston club is BYOB and serves no liquor. They hand you ice, cups and mixers; you bring the bottle. The model was litigated in Houston itself in Hegar v. Space City Management, the operator of colette Houston; the Comptroller's own agents had inspected the club and indicated it was not a sexually oriented business, and the eventual dispute turned on a secretly recorded video and tax procedure - not on whether swinging is legal.
The anchors
Five clubs carry the scene, and they are genuinely different rooms with different door policies. Single-male access is the variable that separates them - it runs from open to a hard five-man cap.
| Club | What it is | Who goes | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| colette Houston | 7,000+ sq ft flagship, far-north FM 1960, open Wed-Sat since 2017 | Couples-led, upscale-nightclub crowd | Single men every night except Saturday; higher door for them ($100-$120) |
| The Night Game | Family-run club around a 1,200 sq ft dance floor, opened 2019 | Mixed; bills itself as the friendliest to single men | Texas Monthly reports it pitched as the largest/most luxurious in Texas; Fri-Sat only |
| The Pendulum Club | Woman-owned, three locations (Hempstead, Airport, New Orleans-themed North in Spring) | Couples and single women | One of the city's strictest single-male policies; Fridays cap the whole club at five single men, door-only |
| Club Choices | Central two-level BYOB club near the Galleria | Budget-minded, more central crowd | Socialize downstairs, play upstairs; $10 lifetime membership, single ladies free |
| Desires Houston | Member-gated lifestyle lounge on the Tomball Pkwy corridor | Established members | Most detail is behind the gate - go through the operator |
Buy the bottle before you leave the house. Every one of these clubs is BYOB, every one is a freeway drive, and there is no liquor for sale once you're inside.
Dress is upscale-nightclub - colette explicitly welcomes lingerie, fetish, leather and gothic and turns away athletic wear, shorts and flip-flops. Clubs also ask members to keep clothing 'street worthy' on the way in and out, which is less a fashion note than a discretion one. You apply at the door with government photo ID; the venues are 21+ across the board.
Myth: Swingers clubs in Texas operate in a legal grey zone and could be raided any night. Reality: The private, no-alcohol membership model is settled law in Houston - in Hegar v. Space City Management the state's own inspectors indicated colette was not a sexually oriented business. The firm legal lines are elsewhere: no prostitution, no unlicensed alcohol sales, and no sexual conduct in a public place (Penal Code Sec. 21.07) - which the members-only structure is designed around.
Beyond the clubs
The on-premise venues aren't the whole map. Houston also runs invitation-only house parties - the best-known is Pineapple House TX out of Pearland, a vetted home party with named themed rooms that screens single men individually. As with the member-gated Desires, the move there is to go through the operator's own vetting rather than chase an unverified link, and to keep personal details private until trust is earned.
There is no tourist season for the venues - they run a weekly Wed/Thu-Sat calendar year-round. Demand tracks Houston's broader event calendar and its more bearable months: spring around the Livestock Show & Rodeo, and autumn. June through September is hot, humid, and quieter on the out-of-town front.

Etiquette & law
- Legal age is 21+; bring government photo ID.
- Legal status: Legal. Clubs operate as private, members-only venues.
- Consent is explicit and ongoing. Always ask; no means no.
- Photography is prohibited inside almost every venue.
- On-premise swinger/lifestyle activity is legal in practice in Texas when run as a private, no-alcohol membership club. The key statute, Texas Business & Commerce Code Sec. 102.051(2), defines a 'sexually oriented business' as a commercial enterprise that BOTH provides live nude entertainment/performances for an audience of two or more AND authorizes on-premises consumption of alcoholic beverages - both conditions are required, so a private club that serves no alcohol and offers no paid nude entertainment is not an SOB under this fee/regulatory scheme. This is exactly why every Houston-area lifestyle club is BYOB and sells no alcohol. The model was litigated in Houston itself: in Hegar v. Space City Management, L.L.C. (Tex. App. 2021) - Space City Management operates colette Houston - the Comptroller's own agents had on several occasions inspected the club and indicated it was NOT a sexually oriented business under the Code, and a Harris County investigation found no violations of the county's Sexually Oriented Business Regulations; the later state assessment relied on a secretly recorded video, and the case concerned that recording and tax/declaratory-judgment procedure, not a ruling that swinging is illegal. When The Pendulum Club opened its Spring location in 2019, its owner publicly confirmed sex is permitted inside and argued the club is lawful because it provides no paid entertainment. The firm legal lines are commercial and public-decency ones: no prostitution (paying for sex is illegal), no unlicensed sale of alcohol (hence BYOB), and Texas's public-lewdness law (Penal Code Sec. 21.07) bars sexual conduct in a 'public place' or where one is reckless about an offended onlooker - which the private, members-only, 21+ club structure is designed to avoid. Venue minimum age is 21 across Houston's clubs. Local zoning and business-operation rules also apply.
