Edmonton, in brief

The scene
Where it happens
Getting started
“A prairie scene that punches above its weight off-premise: two gated clubs up front, and a deep bench of sex-positive groups, munches and poly socials doing the real work.”
Edmonton is not a big lifestyle city, and it doesn't pretend to be. What it has is settled, above-board, and quietly well-organised. The legal footing is the same one Montreal won at the Supreme Court — R v Labaye (2005) held that private, consensual group activity among adults isn't criminally indecent (CanLII). Edmonton lived that fight up close: the West Edmonton club 4-Play battled a development permit on the Stony Plain Road corridor and won a full-time licence in 2011, with its owners pointing straight at Labaye (West Edmonton Local; Xtra). On the ground today that translates to two on-premise venues, an 18+ door with photo ID, phones in lockers, and a profile or invitation you sort out before you ever show up.
The two-club city
There's no nightlife strip here — both clubs sit in quiet urban-fringe pockets, which is good for discretion and bad for hailing a ride at 2 a.m. The split between them is the whole story of the scene: one trades on house-party intimacy and an emailed invitation, the other on inclusivity, licensing, and a purpose-built playroom.
| Venue | What it is | Who goes | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Intimate Times | Friday/Saturday-only private club on 107 Ave NW in the northwest industrial belt. House-party feel — dance floor, DJ, pool table, fireplace lounge, licensed cash bar, and an upstairs open playroom (a large bed and semi-private nooks, no fully private rooms) that opens around 11 p.m. | Couples and single women both nights; single men on Fridays, or Saturdays only if accompanied | First-timers must email for an invitation, bring government ID, and sign a confidentiality waiver. Non-members get one visit to decide if it fits, then membership (Sex Uninterrupted) |
| KNetic Edmonton | about 5,000 sq ft 'nightclub with a twist' near downtown in Queen Mary Park; grand opening March 7, 2026. Starlit dance floor, pro DJs, bar, a dedicated shower room, and a playroom mixing private BDSM-equipped rooms (St. Andrew's Cross, spanking bench, sling) with semi-private areas and a large central space | Couples, single women, throuples; an inclusive members door, with a separate KNetic Men community | Free online member profile required to attend anything. Fully licensed by the City, AHS, the fire department and the AGLC.
The single-male math is the thing first-timers get wrong. Intimate Times admits solo men on Fridays or accompanied on Saturdays — never as a free-for-all — while couples and single women have the run of both nights. KNetic runs an inclusive 18+ members door but keeps a distinct KNetic Men community for men-only energy. Either way, access is easiest for couples and single women, and everyone needs a profile or an invitation first.
The real centre of gravity is off-premise, and it's deeper than the two-club count suggests. ASPECC — the Alberta Sex Positive Education and Community Centre, a non-profit at 12031 76 St NW — runs consent, kink and ENM workshops and socials (ASPECC). KEAN (Kinksters Experienced and New) hosts Edmonton munches, a newcomer 'Foundations Forum,' and monitored play events (KEAN), and the Polyamory Edmonton Association has been running poly support and socials since 2008 (PEA). If the clubs feel thin on a given week — and in a long prairie winter they sometimes do — the munches are where the scene actually socialises. |

- Legal age is 18+; bring government photo ID.
- Legal status: Legal. Clubs operate as private, members-only venues.
- Consent is explicit and ongoing. Always ask; no means no.
- Photography is prohibited inside almost every venue.
- Legal protection flows from R v Labaye (2005 SCC 80): private group activity among consenting adults is not criminally indecent, so Edmonton's clubs operate as private, members-only venues that keep activity out of public view. Alberta's age of majority and legal drinking age are both 18, and venues require government photo ID; the established clubs are licensed (AGLC) to serve alcohol. KNetic Edmonton states it is fully licensed by the City of Edmonton, AHS, the Edmonton Fire Department and the AGLC. Note: KNetic's own pages are slightly inconsistent on minimum age (an '18+' members rule on one page versus a '21 and over' facility reference on another) - confirm at the door.
