Copenhagen, in brief

The scene
Where it happens
Good to know
“It's a small scene in a country that barely blinks - the clubs are licensed, the entrances discreet, and the whole thing feels less like a secret than a service.”
Copenhagen is a small scene that punches above its headcount on acceptance. Denmark partly decriminalised sex work in 1999 and treats consensual adult play matter-of-factly, so swinger clubs - where guests pay entry and only ever connect with each other, never with paid workers - run openly as licensed venues (Prostitution in Denmark; Sex club). The cultural backdrop is one of Europe's most sexually liberal, the kind documented in the nationwide Project SEXUS study. The catch is that 'liberal' doesn't mean 'huge' - it's roughly five venues, and they differ sharply, so picking the format matters more here than picking the night.
The lay of the land
There's no red-light strip. The clubs are scattered across the city - Amager, the Kødbyen meatpacking district, Vanløse - and each runs a distinct register. Pick by what you actually want, because the gap between the high-energy sex club and the quiet sauna is enormous.
| Venue | What it is | Who goes | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| CitySwingers (Amager) | Calls itself Denmark's most-visited swinger club: high-energy, about 12 themed rooms, immediate dress-down rule | Couples, single women, and a famously heavy single-male crowd | All-inclusive door (bar free after entry); commonly reported cash-only; 200 kr off with a free swingeren.dk profile booked ahead. Free clothed walk-through tours Fri/Sat 18:00 |
| XXDark (Kødbyen) | CitySwingers' darker sister - 'part swinger club, part cinema' built around a large BDSM section | Kink-curious couples and singles; same heavy-male tilt | Same owners, same all-inclusive bar model and cash norm |
| Secret Swingers (Vanløse) | Small, playful, theme-night-driven club - sex swing, glory holes, spanking bench, gang-bang/bi/dark nights | Couples and singles wanting something more intimate | Drinks bought separately at the bar; takes cards and MobilePay. Shares a block with the legendary, now-closed Club Adam og Eva |
| Copenhagen Sauna Club (Vanløse) | The city's oldest swinger sauna, open since 1981 - spa pools, private suites, wellness-led | Couples after a relaxed, low-key evening | The calm end of the spectrum; closer to spa than nightclub |
Copenhagen's clubs balance the room with the price list, not the door policy: single men are welcome everywhere, but they pay the top rate - often roughly double the couples price - while single women pay the least.
That pricing logic is the single most Copenhagen thing about the scene. Single women frequently get in for half the couples rate or less; single men pay the premium, which is why weeknights and daytime slots run calmer and cheaper for everyone (live city notes).
The CitySwingers question
CitySwingers is the anchor and also the one couples ask about most. Wanderlust Swingers, reviewing it in detail, describe a 'very watch-heavy crowd' around the couples' spaces - single women very popular, single men mostly watching - and didn't love the constant eyes (Wanderlust Swingers). It's a genuine fit for group and voyeur play; it's a poor fit for a quiet couples evening. For that, regulars point to the smaller Secret Swingers or the sauna instead.
Myth: Denmark is so liberal that its swinger clubs must be a relaxed, couples-easy free-for-all. Reality: The legal openness is real, but the flagship venues run hot and single-male-heavy - so the 'easy' Copenhagen night is the small club or the sauna, or a weeknight/daytime slot at the big one, not a Saturday at CitySwingers.
None of this is a safety story. Copenhagen is a very safe capital, the venues are licensed and professionally run, and a no-photography norm holds in play areas. The thing to manage is balance and budget: bring cash and photo ID, register a free swingeren.dk profile before you go for the discount, and confirm the night's theme and single-male policy first, since the small clubs reshuffle their calendars often.

Etiquette & law
- Legal age is 18+; bring government photo ID.
- Legal status: Legal. Clubs operate as private, members-only venues.
- Consent is explicit and ongoing. Always ask; no means no.
- Photography is prohibited inside almost every venue.
- Swinging and on-premise swinger clubs are legal in Denmark. Sex between consenting adults is lawful, and swinger clubs - where guests pay an entry or membership fee but only have encounters with each other, not with paid sex workers - fall outside Denmark's prostitution rules. Denmark partly decriminalised prostitution in 1999 (selling and buying sex between adults is not a crime), while organised third-party profiteering such as brothel-keeping and pimping remains illegal; swinger venues operate as ordinary licensed hospitality/entertainment businesses. The minimum age is 18 (the national age for buying alcohol in licensed venues is also 18); some adult venues set a higher house minimum - the Copenhagen sex club Adam og Eva argued for 21 in a 2016 employment case - but 18 is the legal floor. Activity is kept indoors in private, members-or-ticket-gated areas.
