Cologne, in brief

Legal landscape
Where it happens
Good to know
“The scene reads less like a downtown district and more like a constellation - one central venue, and the good rooms scattered out across the towns that ring the city.”
Cologne is a large, liberal Rhineland city with a long, open nightlife culture - the kind of place where Carnival shuts down the calendar for a week and the queer scene is a civic fact, not a subculture. The lifestyle world tucked inside it behaves the same way: matter-of-fact, licensed, and discreet. The one wrinkle worth understanding before you go is geography. Most of the venues that say "Cologne" are administratively somewhere else.
The ring, not the strip
Three of the four clubs serving the city are out in the surrounding towns - Dormagen to the north, Kaarst to the west, Bad Honnef to the south between Cologne and Bonn. Only Swingertreff 18 (Kino Hole) in the Zollstock district is actually inside the city, reachable by tram. Everything else is a drive. Plan the ride home before you leave, because some of these sit in commercial pockets where you won't flag a taxi on the street.
| Venue | What it is | Who goes | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beachclub Cologne (Dormagen) | 800 m2+ pool-and-sauna party club | Couples, single women, single men per event | Beach-themed costume parties, a recurring Newcomer Party, all-in buffet-and-drinks door |
| Farell Lounge (Kaarst) | Established all-inclusive swinger club | Couples and single women always; single men on set nights | Five play rooms, couples-only whirlpool, pole stage; reserves one of Fri/Sat each week couples-and-women only |
| Chateau Royal (Bad Honnef) | NRW's largest pure couples club, villa over three levels | Couples and single women only - no single men | 870 m2, up to 120 couples, upscale and event-led; about 110 EUR per couple Fridays |
| Swingertreff 18 / Kino Hole (Zollstock) | Central cinema-and-bar venue | Singles and couples, all orientations | The only walk-up-central option, inside the city proper |
The practical pattern is simple: couples and single women have the easiest access everywhere, and the door policy for single men changes club by club, sometimes night by night.
That last point is the one that trips people. Chateau Royal admits no single men at all. Farell Lounge runs an alternating weekend - one of Friday or Saturday is couples-and-women only, with single men welcome the other weekend night and on Wednesdays. Beachclub Cologne sets single-male access per themed event. None of this is improvised; it's published policy. The mistake is assuming, not reading.
A wellness-and-pool register
The local flavour leans toward water and warmth. Beachclub Cologne is built around an XXL pool, sauna and whirlpool; Chateau Royal runs a terrace and dedicated FKK nights. This tracks the broader German naturist tradition - Freikoerperkultur, the "free body culture," sits comfortably in the liberal-progressive mainstream here rather than at the fringe. The warmer months, roughly May through September, are when the pool-and-garden venues come into their own. Winter pushes the scene indoors and largely local.
Myth: A "Cologne" swinger club means a venue in central Cologne. Reality: Only Swingertreff 18 in Zollstock is inside the city; the polished wellness and couples clubs - Beachclub Cologne, Farell Lounge, Chateau Royal - are in the towns that ring it, a 20-40 minute drive out into Rhein-Kreis Neuss and Rhein-Sieg. Confirm the address, not just the name.
Beyond the on-premise clubs there's a real consensual-non-monogamy community. Polyamorie Koeln runs regular Stammtische, and the PiK (Polyamore Initiative Koeln) poly Stammtisch meets the first Tuesday of each month in the Suedstadt near Chlodwigplatz. That's the daylight version of the same openness - the city has both ends covered.

Etiquette & law
- Legal age is 18+; bring government photo ID.
- Legal status: Legal. Clubs operate as private, members-only venues.
- Consent is explicit and ongoing. Always ask; no means no.
- Photography is prohibited inside almost every venue.
- Swinger clubs are lawful in Germany and are not treated as prostitution. The leading authority is the Federal Administrative Court's decision of 6 November 2002 (BVerwG 6 C 16.02), which held that operating a swinger club in a spatially shielded area - youths excluded, no unwanted public confrontation - does not by itself promote immorality and so cannot be refused a hospitality (Gaststaetten) licence on that ground. Clubs therefore run as licensed hospitality businesses that serve alcohol. The standard minimum age is 18 (some clubs set 21); government photo ID is expected at the door, and venues operate discreetly behind a screened, members-or-guests-only threshold. Note that several of the best-known venues serving Cologne are administratively just outside the city - in Dormagen, Kaarst (Rhein-Kreis Neuss) and Bad Honnef (Rhein-Sieg-Kreis).
