Bordeaux, in brief

“Saturday at La Chaloupe is the city's most coveted night precisely because single men aren't admitted — the door rule is the draw.”
Bordeaux runs a busy, unflashy libertine scene that's the densest in the Gironde — and it sorts itself by format more than by map. On one side, clothing-free saunas built around hot water; on the other, dress-code dance clubs on the right bank. French is the working language, and the door rules are the most important thing a visitor reads before turning up (monpetitdate).
The lay of the land
There's no single red-light strip. Each venue runs its own register, and the practical question — sauna afternoon or late-night dance floor? — sorts them more than geography does. The clearest at-a-glance read of who goes where comes from the French test-guides (monpetitdate; saunaclublebali).
| Venue | What it is | Who goes | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Le 113 Avenue (Eysines) | The flagship: naturist sauna wing plus a separate club wing with dance floor, pole and 14 coins câlins | Couples, single women; single men gated by slot | Called the most complete venue in the Gironde, with free parking; about 15 min by car.
For a softer landing there's the monthly Apéro Libertin — a before-club mixer where newcomers meet libertines over a drink before anyone heads to a venue (Apéro Libertin). Single men, plainlyThe pattern is consistent and steeper than most cities: couples and single women get the easy, cheap (often free for women) door, and single men face the most variable rules in the scene. At the saunas it's a flat premium — 40 € at Le Candy, 30-40 € at Sauna Club Métropole. At the dance clubs it's tighter: capped numbers on busy Friday at La Chaloupe, no single men at all on Saturday there, and no single men in Le 113 Avenue's Friday-afternoon or Saturday-evening slots. None of it is a snub — it's the balance every on-premise club guards to keep rooms even and take pressure off the women in them.
Discretion is the working norm everywhere: phones and photography are banned in play areas — filming or sharing images without consent is a criminal offence in France — and the saunas sanitise their wet areas and provide protection. The recurring note across reviews is uneven door-management at the busiest mixed venue (Le 113's heavy single-male traffic drags its Google score), which is exactly why the harder-gated nights and the smaller couples-built rooms tend to deliver the calmer evening (monpetitdate). |

Etiquette & law
- Legal age is 18+; bring government photo ID.
- Legal status: Legal. Clubs operate as private, members-only venues.
- Consent is explicit and ongoing. Always ask; no means no.
- Photography is prohibited inside almost every venue.
- Swinger clubs (clubs libertins/echangistes) are legal in France. The 1994 reform of the Penal Code removed 'exploitation of debauchery' from the definition of proxenetisme (pimping), so operating a swinger club is no longer prosecutable as pimping; the Cour de cassation (Crim., 27 March 1996) confirmed the line, treating paid 'hostess' contact as the prohibited conduct rather than consensual group activity between adults. Clubs must respect the protection of minors (18+), consent and privacy - filming or sharing images without explicit consent is illegal - and comply with ordinary public-establishment, alcohol-licensing and hygiene rules. Mayors retain general public-order powers over openings.
