Amsterdam, in brief

Legal landscape
Where it happens
The crowd
“One club survived inside the centre; the law sent the rest to the edge of town, behind industrial gates with their own parking.”
Amsterdam has a reputation for permissiveness that the swinger scene only half lives up to. The permissiveness is real, but it is also regulated. Under the city's APV a parenclub is a seksbedrijf — a sex business — because it commercially provides space for sexual contact, even though guests pay a door fee rather than per act. That classification means an operating permit from the mayor, Bibob integrity screening, and confinement to designated business zones. The practical effect is geographic: one venue holds the centre, and the destination clubs sit at the edge of the city or just past its boundary, behind industrial gates with their own car parks.
Where it actually happens
The survivor inside the ring is Same Place, an erotic cafe on the Nassaukade near Leidseplein, open since 1997. The rest of the scene is a short drive out.
| Venue | Where | Who goes | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Same Place | Centre, Nassaukade (Leidseplein) | Mixed, unpretentious; single men most nights | Erotic cafe, est. 1997; Gold/Platinum members only Fri–Sat; black shirt/trousers/shoes for single men; cash, minimum bar spend |
| Club Paradise | Amsterdam-Noord (across the IJ) | Couples & single women; spa crowd | Heated pool, sauna, Turkish bath, darkrooms; couples-only "Couples Paradise" every Saturday; single men Fri/Sun; confirm pricing first |
| Fata Morgana | Muiden (20 km, off the A1) | International couples, roughly 40–60, "stylish, curated" | No membership; all-inclusive about 150–180 EUR/couple covers premium drinks and buffet; single women 50%; no single men |
| Club Showboat | Zaandijk (15 km north-west) | Couples & single women; near-daily themed crowd | Affordable, heavily themed; single men by same-day reservation at a premium; sauna, free parking |
Fata Morgana is the one outsiders cross the country for. The crowd skews Dutch with European visitors, and the all-inclusive ticket — one fee, drinks and food covered — is the format that defines the whole region.
The all-inclusive door fee is Amsterdam's signature. You pay once at the door and the bar stops being a transaction for the rest of the night.
The one repeated complaint is commercial, not criminal. Independent reviews of Club Paradise flag steep and inconsistent drink and door charges, so agree the price before you commit and keep an eye on your tab.
Single men: read the night, not the club
Access for unaccompanied men is the most misread part of the scene, because it changes by venue and by night. Fata Morgana refuses single men outright. Club Paradise bars them from its couples-only Saturday — with a 100-percent money-back guarantee if any single man is present — but admits them Friday and Sunday. Same Place takes them most nights but restricts Friday and Saturday to Gold/Platinum members. Showboat takes them only by same-day reservation, at a premium. Couples and single women have the easiest door everywhere.
Myth: Amsterdam is the anything-goes capital, so any club will let any single guy walk in. Reality: The opposite is closer to true — the scene leans hard toward couples and single women, the destination clubs cap or ban single men, and the permit regime that makes the clubs legal is also what makes them selective.
None of this is gatekeeping for its own sake. It is a couples-centred, femme-friendly scene that happens to be unusually well-lit by the law: permits on the wall, integrity screening behind them, and a house rule at Same Place stated as plainly as it gets — "No means no."

Etiquette & law
- Legal age is 18+; bring government photo ID.
- Legal status: Legal. Clubs operate as private, members-only venues.
- Consent is explicit and ongoing. Always ask; no means no.
- Photography is prohibited inside almost every venue.
- Swinging between consenting adults is legal in the Netherlands. A parenclub (swingers club) is classified as a 'seksbedrijf' under municipal by-laws (the APV) because it commercially provides space for sexual contact, even though guests pay an entry fee rather than per sexual act - so operators must hold an 'exploitatievergunning seksbedrijf' (sex-business operating permit) issued by the mayor, can be confined to designated business areas (bedrijventerreinen), and undergo Bibob integrity screening. The minimum age at venues is 18 (the Dutch age of majority); the higher 21-year minimum discussed in Dutch sex-work legislation applies to prostitution/sex workers, not to swingers' clubs. Venues are licensed to serve alcohol. Note the legal pivot: these clubs profit from admission and bar, not from paid sex, which keeps them distinct from prostitution businesses.
